State: Intact, undamaged
Indochinite is a type of tektite, a natural glass formed by the intense heat and pressure of a meteorite impact approximately 790,000 to 800,000 years ago. It belongs to the Australasian tektite strewn field which covers a vast region including Southeast Asia, Australia and parts of the Pacific. Indochinites are found primarily in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. These black to dark brown glassy stones were formed when terrestrial material was melted upon impact, ejected into the atmosphere and then rapidly cooled as it fell back to Earth. Their aerodynamic shapes are the result of this molten flight through the air. Indochinite is not of extraterrestrial origin but its formation is directly tied to a high-energy impact event that significantly altered the local geology.
